Lugano Plaster Finishes by Venetian Application Inc

Lugano is an Italian plaster finish known for its soft mineral presence, quiet texture and refined movement. It is a sophisticated surface that brings warmth and gentle atmosphere into both classical and modern interiors. Venetian Application Inc applies Lugano using authentic Italian materials and traditional application methods. Artisan Dean Baker, with more than forty eight years of plastering experience, understands the balance of pressure, layering and timing needed to create the subtle yet expressive qualities that define the Lugano finish.

Lugano is selected by clients who want a finish that feels natural and calm while still offering visual depth. It is versatile enough to appear smooth with gentle movement or slightly textured with understated variation. This makes it a strong choice for living rooms, dining spaces, hallways, master suites, offices and hospitality interiors. Its mineral structure gives it durability, breathability and long term character, making it one of the most adaptable Italian plaster systems.

Venetian Application Inc provides Lugano finishes throughout Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, Malibu, Santa Monica, Pasadena, West Hollywood and many surrounding communities. The finish is often requested for projects that require both elegance and quiet expression.

The defining qualities of Lugano

Lugano is a lime based plaster enriched with natural stone powders. These components give the finish a matte mineral appearance with soft texture. Lugano does not create dramatic contrast or heavy stone impressions. Instead it reveals gentle transitions shaped by the artisan’s trowel movements.

One of Lugano’s defining qualities is its balance. It is not as smooth as Marmorino, nor as textured as Travertino. It rests between the two, offering depth without overpowering the architecture. Light plays across Lugano surfaces in a soft and understated way. Morning light typically enhances the highlights, while evening lighting deepens the mineral tones.

Lugano is also a breathable material. Like other lime based plasters, it strengthens through carbonation and matures over time. This natural evolution enriches its appearance and ensures long lasting performance.

Lugano in interior design

Lugano supports many interior design styles. In contemporary spaces it softens angular forms and reduces starkness. Its gentle movement adds warmth without compromising modern simplicity. In traditional spaces Lugano reinforces natural materials such as wood, iron and stone, offering a timeless complement to classical architecture.

Designers often use Lugano for large wall expanses because its consistent matte texture creates visual unity. It is also effective on feature walls, fireplaces, stair halls, master suites and entry areas. The finish is versatile enough to serve as a subtle background or a crafted focal point depending on application style.

In commercial spaces such as boutique stores, hotel rooms, spas and reception areas, Lugano provides a high quality finish that enhances atmosphere without distraction. Its natural appearance helps create environments that feel calm, welcoming and tailored.

How Lugano differs from other Italian plaster finishes

Lugano has its own identity among Italian finishes. Compared to Aquarello, Lugano carries slightly more texture and a more pronounced mineral presence. Compared to Arredo or Etruria, Lugano is smoother and more understated. It does not display the pronounced stone impressions found in Travertino, Pietra or Romano, which makes it suitable for clients who prefer gentle rather than bold expressions.

Unlike Veneziano, which is polished and reflective, Lugano maintains a matte or soft velvety look. This makes it ideal for low sheen environments or rooms that benefit from softly diffused light.

Lugano also differs from Liberty and Fiorentino by offering a slightly more grounded stone like character. While those finishes focus on softness and flow, Lugano incorporates an earthier presence through its mineral components.

The Lugano application process

Lugano requires careful preparation and controlled hand application. The process begins by ensuring the substrate is smooth, clean and stable. Cracks, uneven areas or previous coatings must be corrected before any plaster is added. Proper preparation ensures the finish develops evenly and remains durable.

Dean applies Lugano in multiple coats. The first coat creates the base tone and begins the mineral texture. Subsequent coats refine the movement and deepen the colour. The direction, overlap and pressure of the trowel influence Lugano’s final appearance. Slow deliberate movements create soft transitions, while more expressive movements create a touch of visual energy.

Timing is essential. The artisan must understand when the plaster is receptive to shaping and when it must be left to set. During final stages, gentle compression may be used to enhance unity across the surface. Lugano is typically left matte, although some clients request a slight sheen achieved through careful finishing.

Areas served

Venetian Application Inc provides Lugano plaster finishes in Beverly Hills, Malibu, Santa Monica, Pasadena, West Hollywood, Culver City, Carson, Gardena, Hawthorne, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, Torrance, Inglewood and surrounding Los Angeles communities. Services also extend into selected regions of Orange County and San Diego County.

Colour selection and custom sampling

Lugano accepts a wide range of mineral pigments. Soft greys, warm neutrals, earthy browns, atmospheric stone tones and muted contemporary colours all work well within this finish. Venetian Application Inc provides a custom sample board for each project, allowing clients to see texture and tone within their actual lighting conditions.

Sampling ensures clarity and alignment between design inspiration and final results. Adjustments in colour depth or texture can be made at this stage before the work begins.

Maintenance and durability

Lugano is a durable finish designed to last for many years when properly maintained. Routine care involves gentle dusting with a soft cloth. Because Lugano is mineral based and breathable, it resists peeling and cracking. If a small mark develops, a trained artisan can often blend the area back into the surrounding surface without visible transition.

As Lugano matures, it gains additional character due to the natural carbonation process. This gives the finish a long term beauty unique to lime based materials.
